If you’re trying to decide where to give birth and you live in or around Frederick or Montgomery counties, two of the most commonly considered hospitals are Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center.
FHH Main Entrance

Frederick Health has two distinct entrances. The emergency entrance is for patients entering the hospital after 10pm and before 5am. The Main Entrance with a lobby is where patients enter during normal business hours and before 9:59pm.
Shady Grove Main Entrance

Shady Grove offers unique placement of their current main entrance and ER entrance, which means patients can park in the same lot and enter in the same location no matter what time of day or night. This can lead to less confusion if its late at night and you're in labor trying to figure out where to go.
As a doula supporting families throughout Frederick County, Montgomery County, and the surrounding DMV area, I’ve attended births at both hospitals. While both offer safe, supportive care, there are key differences in provider options, amenities, and overall experience that may help guide your decision.
Location & Convenience: Choosing a Hospital Near You
When choosing between Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center, proximity matters.
Both hospitals provide high-quality labor and delivery care, so many families benefit from choosing the location that is closest to them and easier to access during labor. However, most of my clients wonder if they should be considering more than just proximity.
Facility Updates & Hospital Environment
Frederick Health Hospital has made noticeable improvements in recent years, including updates designed to improve patient navigation and expanded parking options. They also have made exciting new renovations to their labor suites which will be open soon. Check out a video of the new labor suites here!
As far as I can tell, Shady Grove Medical Center has focused more on exterior upgrades, including the addition of a new parking garage. While this will improve long-term accessibility, parking can currently feel limited during peak visiting hours due to ongoing construction.
Cafeterias & Coffee
Both Hospitals offer comparable cafeteria experiences. They both have breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Both cafeterias are comfortable and clean. Be thoughtful of hot entree serving times.

Frederick Health does have a small leg up, considering they offer a coffee bar right next to the Birth Center. However, the hours are obscure at times and are not open after regular visiting hours.
OB vs. Midwife Care Options
One of the biggest differences between these hospitals is access to midwifery care.
At Frederick Health Hospital, many patients have the option to receive care from both obstetricians and certified nurse midwives. This can offer a more personalized and flexible birth experience.
At Shady Grove Medical Center, many provider groups affiliated with Advantia Health have transitioned to OB-only care, which limits access to midwives within that system.
If having a midwife is important to you, this is a key factor to consider when choosing where to deliver.
Labor & Delivery Amenities (Labor Tubs & Comfort Options)
Both hospitals offer options to support comfort during labor:
Shady Grove Medical Center provides labor tubs in select rooms (rooms 14 and 15)
Frederick Health Hospital offers a dedicated labor tub room separate from standard labor suites.
Both hospitals offer labor tools such as birth balls, peanut balls, linens, showers, wireless monitoring, IV pain medications, and epidural pain relief. Each room also includes a convertible couch for your support person that can be folded into a bed. While it’s more functional than luxurious, it allows your partner to stay close and get some rest when needed.
However, neither hospital currently offers water birth.
Nursing Care & Doula Support
Both Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center have strong nursing teams who are experienced in supporting a wide range of birth preferences. Many nurses at both hospitals are trained in Spinning Babies and are generally very open to working alongside doulas. From a doula’s perspective, both hospitals are collaborative environments where your support team is welcomed. Check out this video focusing on one of their CNA's and showcases the L&D floor.
Cesarean Birth Policies & Doula Access
If you are planning for the possibility of a cesarean birth, it’s important to understand current hospital policies. At both Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center, space limitations—particularly in the PACU (post-anesthesia care unit)—there is a strict one support person limit.
This means that in some cases, families may need to choose between having their partner or their doula present during or immediately after surgery. This differs from local Virginia hospitals, where state regulations allow doulas to accompany patients anywhere a partner is permitted, including the operating room. For many families, this becomes an important consideration when building their birth support plan.
Parking & Accessibility
Parking can impact your experience more than you might expect:
Frederick Health Hospital offers both covered and uncovered parking with relatively easy access
Shady Grove Medical Center is expanding parking with a new garage, though current visitor parking may be limited during busy times
NICU Comparison: Frederick vs. Shady Grove
If your baby may need additional support after birth, NICU level is an important factor:
Both Shady Grove Medical Center and Frederick Health Hospital offer a Level III NICU, equipped for higher-risk or more complex newborn care.
Level III NICU is equipped to:
Care for babies born before 32 weeks
Provide advanced respiratory support, including ventilators
Perform or support more complex medical treatments and monitoring
Have neonatologists and specialized staff available at all times
Level III NICUs are designed to handle higher-risk situations without needing to transfer the baby to another hospital.
A Doula’s Perspective: Which Hospital Is Better?
From my experience as a doula attending births at both Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center, patient satisfaction is fairly evenly split.
Some clients strongly prefer one hospital over the other, while many have equally positive experiences at both.
Because both hospitals offer safe, supportive labor and delivery care, I often recommend choosing based on:
Location and convenience
Your provider (OB or midwife)
Your personal preferences for birth amenities
Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Hospital for Your Birth
There is no one-size-fits-all answer when deciding where to give birth in Maryland in Frederick or Montgomery County.
Both Frederick Health Hospital and Shady Grove Medical Center are excellent options for labor and delivery. The most important factor is choosing the environment where you feel informed, supported, and confident going into your birth experience. I often hear from my clients they felt it was helpful to do a tour at both facilities before making their final decision.
